ChatGPT has become the most widely used AI assistant in the world, and for good reason. It handles an enormous range of tasks from writing to coding to analysis to creative work. You can access ChatGPT at chatgpt.com. A free account gives you access to GPT-4o mini with usage limits. The free tier is more capable than most people realize, and it is plenty for light daily use.
ChatGPT Plus at $20/month is where most power users land. You get access to GPT-4o (the flagship model), DALL-E image generation, web browsing, Advanced Voice Mode, and access to GPTs (custom chatbots built by the community). If you use ChatGPT for work, the upgrade is worth it.
ChatGPT Pro at $200/month gives unlimited access to the latest models including o1 and o3 reasoning models, higher usage limits, and priority compute. This is for heavy users, researchers, and developers who push the limits.
Understanding the Models
OpenAI offers several models, and knowing which one to use makes a real difference in your results.
GPT-4o is the default for Plus subscribers. It is fast, capable, and handles most tasks well. Use it as your default for everything from writing to coding to analysis.
GPT-4o mini is the free tier model. It is faster and lighter than GPT-4o, with slightly lower quality on complex tasks. For simple questions and quick tasks, it is perfectly fine.
o1 and o3 are reasoning models designed for complex math, science, and coding problems. They "think" before answering, which takes longer but produces better results on difficult problems. Do not use these for simple writing tasks; they are slower and not better for that.

Prompting Fundamentals
The quality of ChatGPT's output depends directly on the quality of your prompt. Here are the fundamentals I wish someone had taught me when I started.
Be specific about what you want. Instead of "write about AI," try "write a 500-word blog post about AI tools for small business owners. Focus on affordable options under $50/month. Use a conversational tone."
Provide context. Tell ChatGPT who the audience is, what format you need, and any constraints. "I am writing for senior software engineers who use TypeScript daily" produces very different output than "I am writing for business managers who are new to technology."
Give examples. If you want a specific style, show ChatGPT what you mean. Paste a sample of your writing and say "match this style." The model will calibrate to your preferences much better than from a verbal description alone.
Ask for step-by-step reasoning. For complex problems, add "think through this step by step" to your prompt. This forces the model to reason explicitly rather than jumping to conclusions, which dramatically improves accuracy on math, logic, and coding problems.
Advanced Techniques I Use Daily
These are the techniques that took my ChatGPT usage from "nice tool" to "essential part of my workflow."

"The third section needs more concrete examples." "Rewrite the conclusion to be more actionable." Each iteration gets you closer to what you actually want.
Format control: You can specify output format precisely. "Give me the answer as a table with columns for Tool, Price, Best For, and Rating." "Return the response as a numbered list." "Structure this as an executive summary with bullet points."
Using GPTs and Custom Instructions
GPTs are custom chatbots built by the community or yourself. You can find GPTs for specific tasks like code review, data analysis, writing assistance, and more. The quality varies, but some are genuinely useful.
Custom Instructions (available in settings) let you set persistent preferences. I set mine to "Always use a direct, conversational tone. Avoid unnecessary filler. Default to first person unless told otherwise." This means every response starts closer to what I want without me repeating these instructions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Trusting ChatGPT blindly. It makes mistakes. Always verify factual claims, test code it generates, and review its reasoning on important decisions.
Being too vague. Garbage in, garbage out applies to AI prompting. The more specific and detailed your prompt, the better the output.
Not providing enough context. ChatGPT cannot read your mind. If you have constraints, preferences, or background information, include them in your prompt.
Giving up after one try. If the first response is not what you want, refine your prompt. The interaction is iterative, and you will get better results by guiding the model.
Where ChatGPT Fits in My Workflow
I use ChatGPT as the starting point for most of my content. I generate outlines, draft sections, brainstorm headlines, and refine ideas. The output is never final without my editing, but it gets me 80% of the way there in a fraction of the time.
For coding, I use it for boilerplate generation, debugging assistance, and explaining unfamiliar code. I always test and review the output, but it accelerates my development work significantly.
