Perplexity vs ChatGPT Search: Which AI Search Engine Is Better?

I have been running an AI search engine showdown in my daily work for the past three months. Every time I need to research something, I query both Perplexity and ChatGPT with web search enabled and compare the results. After hundreds of queries across technical topics, current events, product research, and general knowledge, I have strong opinions about which one works better and when.

How They Actually Work

Before comparing them, it helps to understand the different approaches.

Perplexity is built from the ground up as an AI search engine. When you ask a question, it searches the web in real time, reads the top results, synthesizes an answer, and provides numbered citations linking to each source. The whole process feels like having a research assistant who finds and summarizes information for you.

ChatGPT with web search uses OpenAI's Browse feature. When enabled, ChatGPT can search the internet to supplement its knowledge. The results are integrated into its response, sometimes with source links but without the structured citation format that Perplexity uses.

The key difference is integration. Perplexity treats web search as the core experience. ChatGPT treats it as an add-on to a conversation.

Accuracy Across Different Query Types

I tested both tools across several categories of questions.

Factual questions with clear answers (Who founded X? What is the population of Y?): Both performed well. Perplexity was slightly faster and more likely to provide the exact number or date. ChatGPT sometimes gave a range or approximation.

Technical questions (How does JWT token revocation work? What is the difference between process and thread?): Perplexity consistently produced better answers. Its ability to pull from documentation, Stack Overflow, and technical blogs resulted in more accurate, detailed, and current responses. ChatGPT sometimes relied on outdated information from its training data.

Current events and news: Perplexity won decisively. It pulled from multiple news sources and provided a balanced, cited summary. ChatGPT sometimes missed recent developments or provided less detailed coverage.

Product research and comparisons: Perplexity was better at pulling current pricing, features, and reviews. I asked both to compare two SaaS products, and Perplexity gave me a structured comparison with current pricing from both websites. ChatGPT gave a more general comparison that missed some recent feature updates.

Complex analysis questions (What are the economic implications of...?): ChatGPT performed better here. Its ability to reason through complex topics produced more thoughtful, multi-perspective answers. Perplexity tended to summarize sources rather than synthesize new analysis.

Source Quality and Citations

This is Perplexity's strongest advantage. Every factual claim in a Perplexity response is linked to a specific source with a numbered citation. You can verify any claim by clicking the link. This matters enormously for research, fact-checking, and professional work.

ChatGPT sometimes provides links but they are less structured and sometimes point to general pages rather than specific passages that support the claim. When accuracy matters, Perplexity gives me much more confidence in the answers.

Speed and Interface

Perplexity is fast. Most queries return a complete, cited answer in 3-5 seconds. The interface is clean and focused on the search experience.

ChatGPT with browse is slower, typically taking 10-15 seconds for web-enabled queries. The conversational interface is richer but can feel cluttered for pure search tasks.

The Pro vs Free Experience

Perplexity Free allows a limited number of Pro searches per day with their best model. Standard searches use a lighter model and are unlimited. Perplexity Pro at $20/month gives unlimited Pro searches, file uploads, and API access.

ChatGPT Free includes limited web browsing with GPT-4o mini. ChatGPT Plus at $20/month gives full GPT-4o with web browsing, image generation, and more.

Which One Do I Use?

Honestly, I use both for different things. Perplexity is my first stop for any research question. When I need accurate, sourced information quickly, it is hard to beat. I probably use it 15-20 times a day for work research.

ChatGPT is what I open for complex analysis, brainstorming, writing, and multi-step tasks. The conversational flexibility and reasoning ability make it better for open-ended work.

If I had to choose only one, I would pick Perplexity Pro. The research quality is that good, and I can always brainstorm in the same interface. But most people will benefit from having both available.
